There are people who buy up all kinds of old and abandoned domains and speculate on their resale. They manage their content either manually or with automatic page generation tools.

A lot of them are managed via automatic tools that give you ads often sketchy websites and online tools.

Most of the time, it’s someone who’s registered the domain in the hopes that it will be more valuable to someone in the future, e.g. if a new company or product needs it.

“Domain squatting”. Registering domains can be as cheap as a dollar per year, especially if you bulk buy. Some companies buy up domains they think will be valuable for companies (common words and combinations for example) for cheap and just point it at an automatically generated placeholder site. Their hope is that a company with deep pockets will like the domain enough to pay them a couple thousand dollars to fuck off and hand it over
