Radio waves are a form of light that your eyes can’t see. Excellent at traveling long distances and passing through cloud, they’re used to broadcast music and TV, in radar, and in your smartphone and wifi.
They travel at the speed of light and can reflect off things, so fire it at the ground and time how long it takes to bounce and you know the height of the ground at that point. Do it across a whole planet and you have a map!
