What are standing charges for on gas and electric bills and why aren’t these regulated by the Government?

I genuinely don’t understand standing charges. Does this make up part of the profit and if so why can’t the Government regulate these charges. Also do these companies pay tax in the UK, if they are UK-based?

Often, depending on where you are, the government DOES regulate those charges. Where I live there is an agency that decides what they can charge. But it’s highly localized.

It costs money to maintain gas and electricity. In theory the fees and standing costs are the cost of maintenance, and the actual bill is how much it cost to get that specific amount of gas or power to your house.
