We don’t know exactly and it varies from person to person.
There are many different SSRIs, and it takes time for them to work. Often, people need to try several ones before they find one that works for them. Brain chemistry is very complex and having too much/too little of a particular chemical is never good, but it is very hard to predict what the effects would be, since they all interact with each other to some extent.
The truth is, we have a very basic understanding of how the brain works, even though one might get the impression that we know what we are doing when we have PhDs.
