What are tire chains and how do they work?

This is my first time being in area where the news is saying that tire chains are required on some roads. Like, how does that work? What are they? I am so confused

It’s literally a chain that wraps around the tires of the cars/trucks.

You lay it out flat, drive onto them, and then wrap them around the tire.

The metal focuses pressure from the weight of the car onto a much smaller area. It’s kind of like adding a much deeper tread to your tire.

Note this is really bad for the roads, but really good when the roads are covered in snow and ice as it allows the tire/chain to dig down deeper and significantly increase traction.

But because of how bad it is for roads you can only use them in certain areas under certain conditions. Most towns don’t allow them on regular cars as they would rather have people just stay home when the weather gets bad. But in more mountainous regions they become a requirement especially for larger semi’s carrying cargo.
