I know eyesight deteriorates as we grow old. Both of my parents start to have poor eyesight around 40+. We are three siblings, me being the eldest followed by two girls. I’m 27 and I’m the only one who has 20/20 vision. Both of my siblings start wearing glasses already during their teenage years due to their poor eyesight. I’m actually quite surprise because I’m the one abusing my eyes during my teenage years by exposing my eyes to long screentime e.g games. I know I’m lucky and I’m grateful for it but I’m just wondering how come they have it and I don’t.

Many different things cause changes in eyesight as we get older. The shape of the eye, problems with various parts of the eye, etc. The most common is presbyopia (literally “old eyes” in Latin) which is caused by general aging of the “focusing” system of the eye – the lens (which is flexible and elastic when you’re young, stiff when you’re old) and the lens muscles (which flex to change the shape of the lens to help you focus and which get weaker as you age). Everyone can expect to have some decrease in vision as they get older, some sooner than others, it’s largely a matter of genetics/luck. Your siblings were likely born with slight errors in the code for their eyeball shape, leading to problems focusing at an early age.
