There are a variety of processes that work less efficiently as we age, but a big part of the hangover issue is sleep. Sleep quality decreases as we age because our bodies create less melatonin and other hormones, enzymes, etc. that drive the sleep cycle. Alcohol disrupts sleep for everyone, but it’s worse for older people with a more fragile sleep cycle and end up waking up a number of times and getting lower quality sleep while they are sleeping. The after effects of the alcohol are compounded by the lack of sleep.
