They’re sore, just like biceps are after curls, just like pecs are after bench press.

Your eyes+lids combo are tiny muscles. Muscles get tired or fatigued after too much use. The only way to let them heal, is by resting which is the most important part of any workout.

Eye strain or eye-burn occurs after too much use. Soreness comes first, damage comes after. Strained muscles are a sign of overuse, which can happen whenever you force your eyes to look at something for long periods of time; some quick examples would be: Reddit light mode, looking at a screen without surrounding light that matches the brightness of the screen, reading in the dark, squinting for no reason, among others.

We should be grateful that our eyes don’t give out so quickly, considering they never stop working. Eyes are underrated.

Your eyelids and eyes are controlled by muscles, the same as your legs, arms, and whatever else have you (In fact the extraocular muscles that move the eye, are striated muscle fiber and functionally quite similar to the muscles in your legs or arms. That’s why you can voluntarily move your eyes. The pupil dilation is done by smooth muscle though), so if the eyes are continually in use without rest you will experience fatigue, damage, lactic acid buildup, etc.
