What causes some glues to work better on specific materials?

It comes down to the material it’s made from. Wood is different from metal as you surely know. And not all metals are the same either. So glue for wood is made out of substances that “stick” better to wood. Same goes for glues made for plastics. Some glues might even “melt” the plastics into each other for better cohesion.
