Where the fat is located.

Beer bellies the fat is behind the muscle so what you’re feeling/seeing is muscle bulging out.

Soft bellies are typically fat ontop of the muscle, so your touching/seeing fat.

The hard bellies are caused by tje fattening of the liver or other organs, usually because of alcohol. Normal fat lies on top of muscle, but because this is fat on the organs it’s pushing out the muscle. You could technically have a six pack with such a beer belly. It’s also a sign of quite serious liver disease
