I remember my dad saying it was the wood etc within the house creaking because it was cooling down because the heating was turned off. Could have been talking BS but I still believe it.

This was happening to me and the panic after was really stressful. My doctor suggested taking an increased dose of my anxiety medication before sleep and I haven’t experienced more than once every few weeks

I’ve had the explosions a few times. Extremely loud like a bomb right in the room. More often it’s very bright light shining in the eyes. Happens to me before falling asleep and not during.

Happens to me every so often, but what I want to know is why my brain will time a dream perfectly to the noise so I’m guaranteed to wake up in a panic..

other than the occasional hpynic jerk, I sometimes also get brutally woken up by a super loud sound that isn’t really imaginary. If I sleep during the day and something outside makes a (loud but not too loud) noise, like somebody dropped a metal bar, it sounds almost like an explosion, whereas the same sound wouldn’t really bother me when I’m awake. I think it could be anxiety but I’m not sure.

For me it’s always a mass of white light in the shape of a body that usually does something sudden to startle me

Got it. It happens from time to time just before I fall asleep. It is like one or two loud bang! Accompanied by a light flash.
Sometimes annoying but not that much for me. I still sleep like a koala bear.

A lot of people are referencing the jerks (hypnogogic jerks?) But what about feeling like something actually touched/tapped/fell on you and waking up and finding no evidence of that actually happening? I felt like something hit me in the neck and woke me up and I could still feel where it had touched me but I woke up so instantly that I would have certainly figured out what had hit me if it had been real.

I’ve had one a week ago. A loud bell rang. But it was not my doorbell. Had me sitting up straight in the middle of the night. It was so realistic. Heart was ging like mad from the jolt.
