Arthritis is a “catch-all” term referring to joint inflammation and pain caused by a disease (rather than say, an impact on injury). There are various causes of arthritis. If you refer to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) then it is an autoimmune disease where the body’s defense system attacks parts of the joint which causes the inflammation and pain.

Gout symptoms are also a form of arthritis.

Some infectious diseases also may result in arthritis.

Inflammation is a body defense system when it detects infection.
