What causes the scent of the outdoors sticking to someone?

When someone brings that fresh scent of the outdoors back inside with them…what causes that? What is that “fresh scent” and why does it stay on someone?

Same thing goes for cow manure. I lived in a farming community growing up and wasn’t too thrilled when my science teacher told us that when we smell cow manure, it’s because we have cow manure molecules in our noses and lungs. 🤢

So smells are just molecules. It’s not just the outdoors but any scent. For plants, they’re called terpenes. Those molecules stick to things and are moved around in the air. When someone comes from the forest and smells like pine or lavender it’s those specific terpenes.
