Have you ever had one of those static shocks when walking on a carpet and you touch someone and you get like an arc flash between you and them? Now replace you two with the clouds and the earth.

One theory I’ve heard is that it’s the buildup and realise of static electricity caused by friction between all the tiny ice crystals inside thunder clouds, the lighting is what happens when the static has built up too much and has to ground itself and the sound is basically a huge version of a spark, like the noice a taser makes but much much much bigger.
