What causes you to feel bloated and gross after eating something unhealthy?

For example if you eat some fast food and then your stomach just feels large and bloated – what’s causing that exactly? Is it gas? Is it hard to break down processed fats? If so, why would your stomach feel so full to the point of like actually looking larger? I’m sure the answers are situation/food dependent, but just curious across the board.

A couple things could be contributing to that feeling depending on what the food was.

1. Fats slow the absorption of food. So with high fat meals, foods will stay in your GI tract longer.
2. Food that are high in carbohydrates (including fiber) feed bacteria in your gut, leading to more gas production.
3. Some foods that are loaded with ingredients that are manufactured (as opposed to coming from natural plant and animal sources) are often just harder for your body to break down.
4. Food that are high in simple carbs can give you a short burst of blood sugar, followed by a blood sugar crash, instead of providing a more steady supply of blood sugar. This can lead to feeling lethargic and also diminish the mount of energy that your digestive system has to digest and absorb nutrients.

The bacteria in your stomach grow and multiplies to better eat the food you eat regularly. That is why when you travel overseas for example you may get a stomach ache from eating “weird” food as it isn’t broken down correctly.

You have the “wrong” gut bacteria to break it down quickly so you get bloated, or your stomach pushes it out too fast ( the squirts ).

For you to say “when you eat unhealthy food” gives the impression you try to eat more healthy food than unhealthy ( stuff that is high in bad fat, salt, oil whatever or conversely too much to cope with )

Body isn’t used to the food, so it “isn’t sure” how to digest it properly.

honestly fast food is just HIGHLY caloric. probably triple to what you’re used to in an “at home” meal. so you just feel like you ate a ton of food because well, you did.
