What do consultants do? I seriously don’t understand what they are especially since you can be a consultant in a completely different field than another consultant? What are you actually doing?

What background or degree/if at all do you need to be one?

I’m an engineer, but perform consulting in a very specific niche field. My company won’t let me put my stamp on a design (nor would I want to) but I can advise the design engineers on best practices before they put their stamp on a design.
Stamp = you are liable if it’s a bad design and someone gets hurt, or it doesn’t function as intended

They’re typically highly skilled and experienced in fairly niche field.

Say your business needs to build a 30 story building for their new headquarters. There is probably no one in your firm who has done this before or even have any construction experience at all.

This is a big deal. You need someone with expertise who has a fiduciary duty to you to guide you through this process.

But once the building is done, you don’t need that person anymore. So you hire a consultant for the duration of the project.

I help you solve problems that you are unable to solve with your own skill set (well, at least in your mind). I have expertise in certain things that you don’t. Sometimes it just means having a set of fresh eyes. (I do find that there are amazingly talented people in every company with untapped potential, but that keeps me employed.) I’m an independent contractor or associated with a consulting firm and am contracted out on a per project or hourly basis.

As already mentioned, a consultant is a person who advices their contractor on how to solve their problems, which they might have the expertise to do.

For example, you might be running a business, which involves multiple facets such as accounting. However, you or your staff might not have the knowledge or skills to implement a more effective way to manage your finances, so you would hire a consultant to evaluate your situation and propose viable solutions.
