What does a compressor/compression do in a audio mix

Not an audio engineer, but as i understand it an easy explanation of compression is it “Makes the louder parts of a sound source (eg a live instrument, etc) quieter, and the quieter parts louder. Used very effectively with distortion in rock music to get a very close, “punchy” sound.
