What does accepting unwanted thoughts mean in mindfulness and meditation?

Mindfulness is a deep subject, but one of the core muscles to practice is developing the “observing self.” There is a self observational part of your consciousness that is without emotion or bias, it is simply able to look at your own mind and determine what is being felt there.

Accepting unwanted thoughts is a behavior of this part of your mind, and so the exercise is that you are activating this less emotional aspect of your consciousness at a time when you are feeling something negative.

The ultimate message is that there is very little you can do to not feel these unwanted thoughts, but there is much you can do to observe them. Who will make a better decision? An angry person, or an angry person who at the moment of becoming angry is able to observe themselves becoming angry?

Most of what you do during mindful meditation is aimed at bringing your mindful self to the forefront, so that in real life when something truly negative happens, you can do just that.
