What does bacteria growing in distilled water in a CPAP humidifier eat?

If you use a CPAP you must used distilled water in the humidifier. If you don’t change and clean it daily bacteria will grow in it. Since distilled water is chemically pure there shouldn’t be anything for the bacteria to eat. So where does their food come from?

Distilled water doesn’t stay pure water very long when exposed to an open environment. The bacteria and organisms in the environment get into the water.
