What does chewing gum actually do?

I see chewing gum advertised as being able to clean your teeth and mouth, but how does it do this apart from making my breath smell better?

Chewing gum make your mouth generate more saliva, which washes away the acids, sugar and other food particles. There’s also evidence that xylitol, an artificial sweetener commonly used in gum, helps prevent the growth of streptococcus in your mouth.

It catches bits of food stuck in your teeth. That’s about it. The most important part of brushing your teeth is the mechanical action of removing unwanted materials from your teeth. Gum can do something similar, though not as well as a good brushing.

Chewing gum makes you more relaxed, because you only eat when its safe, so if your eating, you must be safe.

Its a great way to lower anxienty.

I’ve found it great for helping with my hayfever too. I don’t know why it helps but it’s much harder to sneeze and have a runny nose when I’m chewing gum

Pro wrestlers (not sure about other athletes) will often chew gum to help them regulate their breathing!

Well you are producing more saliva, the gum is dancing around in your mouth and rubbing on your teeth… there’s just a lot of motion going on and it does help to remove leftover food particles.

It’s like brushing your teeth but like at 2% the power.

It’s just something fun to chew on. Companies have made it more than that. We’ve been chewing on random things for eons

I find it makes me hungry, don’t know whether this or true or false but it tricks your brain into thinking food is about to enter your stomach which starts the digestion process – obviously there’s no food going down there so it gives you the hunger sensation. I don’t know if I read this along time ago and it’s true or its just I believe its true and makes me hungry

Chewing gum is usually not biodegradable, which is why so many public surfaces are usually covered in it.

I’ve never understood the point of a food product that you need to discard after eating.

A mint might be a better option.
