What does chewing gum actually do?

I see chewing gum advertised as being able to clean your teeth and mouth, but how does it do this apart from making my breath smell better?

Chewing gum is usually not biodegradable, which is why so many public surfaces are usually covered in it.

I’ve never understood the point of a food product that you need to discard after eating.

A mint might be a better option.
