What does chewing gum actually do?

I see chewing gum advertised as being able to clean your teeth and mouth, but how does it do this apart from making my breath smell better?

I’ve found it great for helping with my hayfever too. I don’t know why it helps but it’s much harder to sneeze and have a runny nose when I’m chewing gum
