What does chewing gum actually do?

I see chewing gum advertised as being able to clean your teeth and mouth, but how does it do this apart from making my breath smell better?

Chewing gum make your mouth generate more saliva, which washes away the acids, sugar and other food particles. There’s also evidence that xylitol, an artificial sweetener commonly used in gum, helps prevent the growth of streptococcus in your mouth.
