God is dead is essentially the distillation of Nietzsche brand of nihilists philosophy. As Nietzsche saw it the concept of god could no longer fulfill the role it once did as society. For a very long time society was governed under the idea that things are the way they are because god wants it that way. enlightenment ideals had essentially killed those notions. God is dead and there is no going back so what now.
