what does it mean for a machine to “learn?” How do we quantify something like skill growth when, for humans, learning is a subjective experience?

Lots of folks have covered what it is and how it works, all I’ll add is that 95% of the time if a company says they are using machine learning (and AI) that’s just ‘marketing fluff’ to sell a product or service. There are people doing impressive stuff in these spaces, but most of the claims of most companies are just hot air.
I have a masters in machine learning. It’s simple – it has to be taught. Either from a teacher, or from experiences. Or, it learns some things are similar to other things, but doesn’t know what those things are, just that they’re similar.
