What does it mean for a reservation land to be disestablished and/or taken out of “trust?”

Sorry if this maybe belongs on a different subreddit, but I’m having trouble reading through the lawyer-speak information I’m finding online about tribal land laws. I’m wondering this today because of [this message](https://mashpeewampanoagtribe-nsn.gov/news/2020/3/27/message-from-the-chairman-we-will-take-action-to-prevent-the-loss-of-our-land) from the Chairman of the People of the First Light. I’m wondering simply what that means, regardless of context, and I can’t find the info easily online. Thanks in advance!

It means that said reservation is no longer being considered a reservation. The land is losing its legal protections as a reservation and its ownership is reverting to the Federal Government. It appears to be happening (based on context clues) because either the total numbers of members of the tribe, or the numbers who choose to live on the reservation have dropped below the minimal numbers to maintain reservation status and that the Chairman and tribal lawyers are trying to fight that claim.
