What does it mean when a project is “grounded” and “realistic”?

When I hear an announcement of a new TV show, movie, cartoon, etc., it sometimes states that it is going to be a “grounded” and/or “realistic” take on the original. What do they mean by that?

Grounded and realism means that characters face consequences for their actions. There won’t be any massive shootouts without consequence, events will tie into each other in a way that reflects how the real world would function if said events happened.

It’s much harder to write convincingly, but the payoff is a far better realised world that you can believe in, in a way that less grounded or realistic shows can manage.
