What does my eye prescription mean?

I got this prescription at an eye-checking machine. I feel like my left eye is really bad and doesn’t see well in the distance. What do the results mean exactly?

The good news is, while you have about -0.25 diopter myopia, I have been living a fine life for 40 years with more than -7.00 diopters myopia. So don’t fret.

Hey little Tommy, Mrs Spencer has been teaching you addition/subtraction math right? Well good vision is zero. If your glasses prescription is minus 1 that means your eyeball has built in plus 1 glasses inside. To get good vision you need to subtract 1 to get to zero. So 1 – 1= 0 and zero means you have good vision. When you get older we can talk about the other numbers and what they mean but you need some geometry, fractions, and division first.

Ultimately you are mildly nearsighted with a very mild astigmatism. Glasses or contacts would help. Go see an actual eye doctor for actual advice 🙂
