Sleep mostly is for our minds to process data to long term memory. If you lose consciousness before laying down to sleep, you may lose some or all the memories gained since your last sleep cycle. Think losing power on your computer before being backed up!
Heavy mental or physical exertion will require rest as the “body” does need a rest period.
I have found that age does affect this. When older you get very little physical relief in sleeping, in fact you WILL have many times that you will wake up feeling worse than when you did going to bed. BUT, you will get/need less sleep to process info.
