Whenever you post something, you need to list the websites, news articles, or scientific papers where you got the information, so that the readers of your post can go and verify that you’re not lying or posting fake news. So the list of websites that you used for your data is called the “sources” or the “references” list.

Reddit and the web in general lets us [create links like this](https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/references/elements-list-entry) so you can just click to go check the source, but for more “formal” articles like a news piece or something that you would have to submit for school, you have to create a “separate” list and not just links.

So there are [different “formal” ways](https://pitt.libguides.com/citationhelp) of listing your sources:

* The APA (American Psychology Association) style is popular with news articles and university papers, it lists the name of the author and the date of the publication (how recent it is), which are important for news and for school work.

* The MLA (Modern Language Association) style is also popular, it’s used extensively for printed work (research articles, formal publications in science journals, etc.).
