Depends what kind of electrolysis you’re talking about. Sometimes it’s a medium to dissolve the stuff you split by electrolysis, sometimes it IS the stuff you split (like water to hydrogen electrolysis)

In hydrogen electrolysis, the liquid (water) is the main ingredient. More generally, the electrolyte is just a substance connecting the electrodes which allow ions or electrons to move through it.
