What does the sun do to pigment that makes it fade over time?

The colors fade because of exposure to UV radiation from the sun. UV radiation causes reaction with most things it comes in contact with and degrades them over time. Paint will lose its color, plastic will become brittle. Some materials (and paints) are more resistant than others to UV radiation and some are less resistant and will get effected more/faster.
