What does turning clothes inside out before washing them actually do?

If the clothes have metal zippers/buttons/clasps. Turning them inside out protects other clothes from catching or being damaged by them and protects the washer and dryer from knicks and scratches.
Although if you have pets the pet hair doesn’t seem to get removed as well when items are inside out.
