Just read a headline saying scientists have created two dimensional time, what is this? What practical applications will it have?

There are normaly three dimensions which are up-down, left-right, forward-back, and space-time making four.
Two dimensional time wants to add another dimensional plane into the mix.
In my opinion physicist are always trying to add dimensions that they can never prove exist to make the math work.
