What exactly causes wind?

Ultimately, it’s caused by the sun.
When air gets hot, it expands, the density gets lower. When air cools, it contracts, the density gets higher. The sun doesn’t heat all the air on the planet evenly, resulting in some areas having high density and others low density.
The air all wants to be an even density, so air molecules will flow from high-density regions to low-density regions to even it all out. That flow of air molecules is the wind.
The bigger the difference between the high density and low density areas, the more rapidly the air moves, the stronger the wind.
