Lightning is the path a discharge goes through between clouds and the ground.

See, everything around us has some charge, be it positive or negative. Turns out that clouds have a very high charge opposite to the ground, and when the charge difference gets high enough, there is an energy release in the form of lighting. You can picture the energy release like a dam that fills to the brim and breaks to release all its water.

The light is part of that energy release, and the noise is from the charge travelling through the air.
