Marketing. Fast food is only ‘junk food’ because people are seduced into eating it frequently. If you ate, say, Dominos pizza, once every six months, while eating fruit, veg, lean meat etc in between times, no problem. Eating it daily/a few times a month makes it ‘junk food’ and unhealthy for you because you’re not getting properly balanced nutrition. Add lifestyle factors like less exercise, staying indoors all the time etc and you’ve got our current situation.
Highly processed foods that have had their nutritional value and even flavor stripped out. Then had flavor injected back in with excessive grease, salt, and sugar.
On top of this, the food is designed in such a way that it is usually frozen and then reheated and then left out in a try for awhile. The food is made with excessive preservatives in order to make this possible without giving people food poisoning or having things look bad.
It’s interesting because there’s a reason you can tell the difference between places like McDonalds and places like The Habit, even though they sell the same stuff.
McDonalds fries when grown doused with so much pesticide that the farmers can’t go back into the fields for days/weeks. Then they are soaked in sugar and the salt they put on them has sugar in it as well. Also, the seed oil they cook them in is super bad for you.
They also are not vegan – soaked in beef broth with the sugar. Sorry vegans/vegetarians
The major problems with food is what was once scarce and prized has become common. Fatty salty and sweet foods have things that are costly to aquire in the past. Today I can get more than my body can handle in one meal and given that you can only consume so much food in a day you need it to contain both the calories you need (which were previously scarce and therefore tasty) as well as fiber and vitamins which are fairly common.
Junk food has alot of what we crave and the rest gets ignored because there was no evolutionary pressure to eat it because is was basically unavoidable.
