What exactly is the difference between a short movie and an episode of a TV show?

I noticed that short movies and episodes are almost the same in terms of time length (especially tv shows that are based off a book series for example Meg and Mog) But what is different in a short movie to an episode of a TV show?

The difference is the narrative structure.

Movies are like short stories. There is a beginning, a middle, and and end all in one instance. Generally, the end of the movie is the end of the story.

In contrast, episodes of television shows are serial, and so are more like novels. Each episode is like “and then this happened” and the next episode is “and this other thing happened.” The episodes don’t end the story, but instead keep it moving.
