Toxic Shock Syndrome is the term used to refer to serious complications caused by toxins produced by specific bacterial species.
TSS can come from any source of bacterial infection, such as skin wounds or surgery.
The reason it’s so associated with certain tampons (and actually other menstrual products too) is that they create a kind of ideal environment for the bacteria to grow, may carry bacteria into the vaginal canal, may cause micro-cuts that let the bacteria or toxins get into your system, and staunch the flow of menstrual blood so there’s no natural flow helping flush the bacteria out.
