What exactly is Youtube SEO? And does it actually matter?

every so often i’ll hear about youtube seo and tags and such and like, as a guy who’s \*trying\* to start a small youtube channel, i wanna know what this is all about. like do i put tags in the description? do i put tags in the youtube upload page? both? does it actually matter if i just put a really enticing title? does it really affect the grand scheme of things? and is there anything with youtube seo beyond tags?

SEO (search engine optimization) is based around the wisdom of putting certain keywords in your title and description. Essentially you have to anticipate what people will search for. So, for instance, if you make a video of a song and use a very high-definition source, there are different ways of specifying that in the title. If you get too specific, such as by stating the various stats associated with how it’s HD, you might end up putting something in there that would never get searched for. As an example, I post music at altered speeds. I used to specify the amount of change, but someone mentioned early on that a less specific way of describing it would garner more views, as you wouldn’t just be relying on the video to appear on the right, you’d also be relying on it popping up in searches. Nobody searches for “10% Faster” but they do search on “Faster” or “Sped Up”. Just think of what you would do if you wanted to find something.

They also say that if there’s a certain keyword that dominates the search, use it more than once. Use it in the title, and a few times in the description. Starting off the description with your keyword is also good. Tags are not useful anymore, though Categories are still very much used.

Outside of YouTube, SEO includes things like adding in a description meta tag to your head section. Stuff like that. That’s way more complicated, but it’s the same concept.

SEO means Search Engine optimisation.

Let’s try an example. You want to record you playing Game. Normally, you’d just name your series “Game gameplay”, and put #Game in the tags or description. But, if someone searches “Game playthrough”, someone else who did the same as you, but also put “Game playthrough” in the description, will likely be higher on the list of searched videos by that someone. As such, you want to put all possible searches in your title or description, such as “Boss X fight” and etc. on your videos, to increase the chance of the search engine putting your video higher on the list
