It poisons you, inhibiting judgement as parts of the brain are impaired. It’s also a depressant, which means it slows down a lot of your bodily functions (heart rate and breathing). It’s a diuretic so you tend to pee more which can dehydrate you and lead to a hangover the next day.
In addition to being a depressant, which can have a calming effect, the lowering of inhibitions is often accompanied by a sense of euphoria.
Edit: Not saying “poisons” as a value judgement, that’s literally what it does and being “drunk” is the effect it has in low doses. At higher doses it can kill you.
