The body is no longer producing the hormone that tells the ovaries “currently pregnant, don’t send more eggs” and the cycle restarts. Often, it doesn’t take very long. I know kids who are 15 months apart (congrats to the parents for finding the time) and some women get pregnant even sooner after birth.
