It depends on a lot of different factors. Every city / state is different and some of them do things their own way.
In some states, if they find you dead, the police don’t get involved in notifying next of kin – the city or county coroner will have that responsibility. After the coroners establish the identity of the dead person using state records, the coroner’s office will request the emergency contacts of that person from the state and then they make the phone calls to next of kin.
If you die in an accident or some kind of public incident or emergency situation, then the police will sometimes take the responsibility to locate and contact next of kin.
It’s highly dependent on 1) how you died and 2) where you died and 3) were you already dead when cops arrived
