Jump scares trigger the “Fight or Flight” response. This is when your brain sees something that is seen as a threat and sends a message to the rest of the body to prepare to either fight or run away. As a result, our heart begins to beat faster which pumps more blood to our muscles, our eyes get bigger to see better, and we breathe faster to get more air into our bodies. The “quick jolt” is a result of your muscles tightening up, sometimes called a “startle reflex”. This response helps us get ready to quickly move in case there is danger.
