It “contaminates” the plastic in the recycling bin because it is not an acceptable item for curbside recycling. Where I live much of the recycling is so contaminated that the recyclers don’t accept it they just send it to the landfill because there is too much waste, dirty, and contaminated materials it’s not worth it for them sort through clean etc. This happens because people don’t know how to properly recycle. But we have to recycle anyway! Trash does not get picked up unless both trash and recycling bins are out.
Our recycling/garbage company actually put out a flier about this
plastic film and plastic bags are terrible for their sorting machines, jamming or slowing the machines and have to be removed bit by bit, so each plastic bag coming in has to be handled by hand. They either throw the whole bag it into the garbage completely, or pull out what’s in the bag.
They really wanted to make it clear it messes up their machines, glad they did, I was carrying my recycling in garbage bags. I do believe there are special recyclable bags that can be used as well
