What happens to shows and movies that are written off?

They go into the production companies vault or are destroyed. Once a film or television show is written off, they aren’t legally allowed to distribute it or show it anymore (for profit) as they’re saying with the write off that they’ve accepted the loss on it and aren’t trying to recoup any money on it anymore.
