What happens to the expired food items which are sent back to the manufacturer/company?

I have heard that when a food product expires and has not been bought from a market or shop, it’s sent back to the company. But what does the company do with this expired product?

Some groceries sell their inventory before it expires to other grocery businesses. For instance the expiration date at Kroger or Publix or Target is 2021. You go to Walmart and it is 6 months out. You go to Dollar Tree or Dollar General and it is 3 months out.

For single stores, the inventory is up to that region or store so they may donate it (opening to legal liabilities so I doubt many do) or throw away.

Almost none would go back to the manufacturer unless it is non perishable inventory with no expiration or expiration dates that don’t mean much. Sometimes the manufacturer may own the inventory until it’s sold, in which case they might decide what happens to it.

Even dog food …. per say…. has strict rules and even stricter rules since dogs eat the same thing everyday so it’s easier to see what made them sick.

They recycle the can it was in, the rest of it isn’t worth much.

It gets returned for credit.

They can use the food for animal feed, but more than likely it just gets thrown away.
