I get it that our brain never stops working, but we all can be thoughtless and some more than others. Why is it so hard to achieve?

“Thoughtless” is a loaded term. It often means “doesn’t care”, which is different than “free of thought”.

It takes more than a lifetime to learn how to actually free yourself of thought, but we keep trying. It’s hard because it’s difficult to be conscious without being conscious of something. So we keep trying to remove ourselves one more level, to make our consciousness observe the part of our mind that experiences the things. It never ends, but it’s always a good effort.

We can’t not think. But we can always try. And in trying, we can cut out what doesn’t matter. And in cutting out, we can learn something.
