You know when you wake up, and you can only turn your neck in one direction because it hurts like hell (likely from sleeping in a bad position)?Physiologically – what’s happening? Is it something related to muscles, joints, tendons, nerves? Is there a best course of action to resolve the pain and whatever’s causing it?

It’s often due to acute cervical locking. There are little fibrous discs in the joints of your spine (not the disc in the middle that can herniate) and if you sleep in a wonky position they can sort of flip down and block the joint on that side from moving properly. That’s why you normally can’t turn or side bend your neck to the same direction. Over time or with certain treatments the disc goes back where it should and movement is restored.
