Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria. They work the same way as other viruses: they inject their own genetic code and hijack the cell’s machinery to make more viruses.

It’s a cool name for a virus that infects bacteria. They [__look like this__](https://textbookofbacteriology.net/phagestructure.jpg) and are essentially just really small DNA/RNA injectors that shoot their DNA/RNA into bacteria who then unknowingly start producing more bacteriophages.

This has the side effect of killing the bacteria in many cases which has formed the basis of [phage therapy](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41599-020-0478-4) which might soon become a more widely available treatment for antibiotic resistant bacteria.
